Poetry winners for the ‘Imagine’ Poetry competition

Young Writers LogoCongratulations to Amy Chater (Year 9), Imogen Carter (Year 9) Kishan Vegamwala (Year 12), Samu Hayes (Year 12) and Dan Hazell (Year 13) for their winning entries for the recent poetry competition.

Here is an extract from an entry:

Hedgehog bush-bound baby.

If I was a tailor, then I’d be walking free,

But my old man’s a sailor, and he’ll make

one of me,

Mother says I’m wasted, my talents lie behind the line,

But father he won’t take it, he knows what’s right for him, so that’s what’s right for me.

A Real Book Buzz

Remote Reading Academy has become real! It has been lovely to see our Year 7 Reading Academy students in The Compass this week, meeting their Post 16 coaches for the first time in ‘real life’, as opposed to on a ‘Google Meet’. Around 70 students have been involved, and all have participated brilliantly in group reading and discussion. Massive thanks to our Post 16 students for their leadership, and Well Done to Year 7s for turning up and taking part during morning registration. The atmosphere has been superb!

Launch of Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2021

The 23rd Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award, one of the largest and most prestigious awards for young poets aged 11-17 writing original works in English, opens today for entries from young writers aged 11-17.

Run by The Poetry Society, with the generous support of the Foyle Foundation, the competition invites entries from both individual poets and schools anywhere in the world.  All entries are free and poems can be on any theme, and of any length. The deadline is 31 July 2021.

This year’s judges are poets Clare Pollard and Yomi Ṣode, who will read the poems submitted and discover the next generation of brilliant poets. To support entrants, they have recorded a video to detail what they’ll be looking for during the judging process alongside judges’ blogs here and here.

This year’s winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony in October 2021. The top 15 winning poets will have their poems published in an anthology in March 2022. Today also marks the publication of the current year’s anthology, entitled You Speak in Constellations. It features winning poems from the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2020.
