Academy Students Make It to Calais

On the 22nd of April 2013, we took part in our triathlon which was a huge success, everybody managed to complete the distances that were set for them and although we were extremely tired at the end of the day it was a great achievement for us all. We started the event at the beginning of second lesson and completed it just before lunch. Hannah and I are currently collecting and calculating the amount of money that we have raised as a team and we are exceeding our £500 target. We are amazed with the amount of donations and support that we have had from the community, Cancer Research and friends and family, and it is great news knowing that the proceedings are going to a cause which is so close to many of us.

Student Enjoys The Cambridge Experience

Greg Jones, Year 11 student had the fantastic opportunity and experience to take part in the Easter Residential Science Master class at Pembroke and St Catherine’s Colleges, University of Cambridge. The three days were action packed with a variety of activities from museum visits for Earth Sciences and Zoology to a performance depicting the life of Galileo also Physics workshops, Chemistry demonstrations and lectures.

Greg said “I really enjoyed the Easter Residential Science Master class as I thought it told me a lot about University life for students through spending two nights at Pembroke College, Cambridge University”. It was clearly an unforgettable experience for Greg and will help with his future plans. Greg added, “Overall I found the course to be very useful as not only did it give me a wider view of science and a better understanding of it for degree courses, but I also experienced University life as well, which helped me plan my subject choices for my future and how I should aim to get into a top University such as Cambridge”.

Golf Lessons A Success

Under the tutelage of Richard Hughes, Golf Professional at Forest Hill Golf Club Bosworth Academy students have been benefitting from free golf lessons made possible through Sportivate funding. The lessons have been a real success with 7 boys going on to play in the Leicestershire Schools Golf Competition and 8 girls taking the opportunity to play the Academy course at Kyngs Golf and Country Club, Market Bosworth. For all of the girls this was their first real round of golf and now all of the girls are keen to continue playing after the lessons have finished.

Healthy Relationships Project

A group of 25 Year 10 students took part in 10 two hour sessions with Soft Touch Community Arts examining the issue of Healthy Relationships. The students really enjoyed the opportunity to find out about this crucial issue as well as the chance to work in a collaborative and active way. The group wrote a series of short drama pieces which were then filmed to highlight different aspects of healthy relationships. The whole of Year 10 watched the films in their tutor groups and discussed the issues that the drama pieces raised. Students who took part were extremely positive about the experience as were those who watched the film in their tutor time.

Olympic Star Get To Grips With Pupils

Team GB Medallist Karina Bryant took time out to visit two local schools on May 10th to teach pupils more about the sport of judo and the life of an elite athlete. As part of the Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport Olympic and Paralympic Roadshow Karina visited pupils from Barlestone Church of England Primary School and Bosworth Academy. Both schools identified pupils to attend an inspirational assembly providing pupils with the chance to ask questions and see close up a London 2012 medal. Karina spoke honestly about her experiences at London 2012 and the ups and downs of a career that has spanned 16 years. A career that has included medals at the all the major championships but also disappointments at previous Olympics.

Karina also spent time on the mat delivering judo masterclasses to pupils who attend the judo clubs that operate at both schools; including Matt Bratton who has just been selected for the GB squad. Pictured from left to right are Bosworth Academy students Sam Marston, Catherine Goodge, Joe Kilby, Jamie Blower , Matt Bratton.

Karina also took time during her visit to Bosworth Academy to meet with students that had produced artwork that appeared in the Athlete’s apartments at London 2012. This opportunity was the results of the Academy’s involvement in the Get Set 2012 education programme when students were given the opportunity to work with artist Tine Bech to produce Olympic related images using light technology. Only recently has the Academy been given permission from the British Olympic Authority to reproduce the images for display around school and just like they did in the Athlete’s apartments the images capture the attention of all those that see them. Pictured from left to right are Bosworth Academy students Catherine Goodge, Victoria Straughn, Sophie Clarke, Fay Tomlinson, Kira Pattinson, Lucy Neale, Hannah Lowe, Robyn Elms and Thea Ward-Worley who were involved in the project.
