Bosworth Academy's 3rd Annual Open Day

Saturday 20th June 2015: 10am – 1pm

Welcome to Bosworth Academy for our third annual Saturday Learning Carnival, which takes place Saturday 20th June 2015 at 10am-1pm. If this is your first time at Bosworth, I hope you will leave having had an enjoyable and informative day; most of all I hope you get a real sense of our passion for learning and our commitment to make a difference. For those who know us already, I’m sure you will get an impression of how much we have changed and developed over the last few years.
Please take the time to talk to our staff and students as you walk around on the day and if you have any questions make sure you get them answered before you leave. We are proud of the service which we provide for our community and are delighted to see you.

Best wishes,
Chris Parkinson.

Key Stage 4:
Years 10 and 11 (KS4) are a vital part of the journey at Bosworth Academy, as it is during these years where GCSEs are completed. Throughout the day you will have a chance to experience the wide range of subjects that are on offer at KS4, together with the innovative and engaging teaching that KS4 encompasses. Students, teachers and parents are supported by the Maximising Learning Team (MLT), through an excellent tutoring and pastoral system, and they will be available throughout the morning to field any queries.
Ben White
Head of Key Stage 4

Sixth Form:
Pop down to the Oaks to see the study facilities we have in the sixth form. Have a chat with current students about their experience at Bosworth and meet the team of Year Heads.
There will also be a presentation in the Oaks to give guidance on planning for the future.
Louise Holdback
Head of Post 16 Sixth Form

Preparation for exams

Year 12:
Students are expected to attend timetabled lessons until the last exam in that subject. From this date lessons will be coded as appropriate by the attendance team. They should still continue lessons for subjects they have yet to complete. Morning preparation for an afternoon exam may be permitted by the tutor and should be coded by the tutor.

For BTEC courses, completion dates will be decided by the teacher on submission of work of the highest possible standard.

Year 13 courses for current Year 12 students will begin week commencing on Monday 08/06/15. All exams will have then finished except for a very small number of students who will be coded appropriately.

Morning preparation for an afternoon exam may be permitted by the tutor and should be coded by the tutor.

Students are expected to attend ALL timetabled classes.

Year 13:
Normal timetabled lessons will finish on 22/5/15 but students should continue to attend timetabled lessons until their final exam in that subject. Attendance is not required upon completion of all exams.

General Election 2015

Bosworth Academy believes it is vital to engage young people in politics and the political process. This is ever more vital when there is a possibility that the voting age may be reduced and conceivably all our students will be eligible to vote in the 2020 General Election. Similarly, a lack of political understanding, and sophistication leads young people to be naively swayed by simplistic, easily understandable yet extremist philosophies; it is our responsibility to fight extremism of all persuasions wherever it exists. At the same time, we have a responsibility to do this without showing party political bias and recognising our societies deeply held values of democracy and free speech.
In the last few weeks we have had visits from Chris Keely, the Labour party candidate for Hinckley and Bosworth, and David Tredennick who is our sitting conservative MP and seeking re-election. They were both impressed by our desire to inspire young people with politics, and supportive of our approach.
Over the coming weeks we will be running filmed student hustings and talking to our young people in assembly and tutor time about the political process. We will be seeking students’ views in a controlled and responsible way on the key issues which will affect them as they move through education and the adult world.

Bosworth Academy Students Visit Corpus Christi

On 11th February 2015, we took twenty-one Year 12 students to visit Corpus Christi College at the University of Cambridge. The purpose of the trip was to give our students a taste of life as a University of Cambridge student as well as providing them with crucial advice on how to be a successful candidate in the rigorous application process to Oxbridge.

We arrived at the historic College (founded in 1352) and were given a session on ‘Applying to Cambridge’ by Dr Nicki Humphrey-Baker. Students were given a detailed insight into the lengthy application process and were given excellent advice on how to become a successful candidate. With our Year 12 students beginning the UCAS process later on this year, this talk was invaluable at giving our potential Oxbridge candidates the grades required and skills they need to develop in order to become an Oxbridge undergraduate.

Lunch was taken in the magnificent dining hall before the students broke off into smaller groups for a guided tour around the College by current Cambridge undergraduates. Here, they had the opportunity to see some of the most spectacular buildings as well as ask questions of their tour guide. The groups reconvened for a more formal question and answer session with the 5 Corpus Christi students (a geographer, an historian, a geologist, a philosopher and a computer scientist), where we could find out a students perspective of studying at Cambridge as well as the work required to attain a place.

The day finished with a taster lecture from Dr Richard McMahon from the University of Cambridge Engineering Department who provided a stimulating session on Renewable Energy sources. The Bosworth Academy representatives showed exceptional enthusiasm and answered the questions posed of them with confidence and accuracy.

This was a very rewarding trip for both staff and students alike. The invaluable information has given our students, not just a better idea as to how to apply for Oxbridge courses, but to university life in general. Our students left Corpus Christi with an improved appetite to ‘be better than they thought they could be’ and has motivated many of them to consider applying for Oxbridge courses this Autumn. As always, the Year 12 students represented the Academy with pride and distinction, and are a credit to this institute.

Bugsy Malone Production

. The Bosworth Academy Performing Arts team are proud to announce the upcoming production of Bugsy Malone. For the first time in Bosworth history all key stages are involved. At least half of our wonderful, talented cast are from our new Laureates in Year 7. We are also very proud to be offering students not just the opportunity to perform but also to become members of the stage crew. The stage crew is being led and mentored by our very experienced Design Technician, Nicole Foxall. She has the students managing budgets, organising costumes and designing and building the set. They have also organised several fantastic fundraisers around the school including a ā€˜dress for an era’ non uniform day, a delicious cake sale and ā€˜Name the Bugsy Malone Teddy Bear’.

The musical is a feast of action, music and a splurge of guns galore. Two rival mobster gangs fight a comic war against the backdrop of New York City and 1920s prohibition. Meanwhile our leading man, Bugsy, played by the talented James Cottis, tries to win the affection of Blousy Brown. She is talented singer and feisty young woman who wants to realise her dreams and become famous.

Our first show takes place on Wednesday 18th March with subsequent performances on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st (matinee and evening). You will be invited into Fat Sam’s Speakeasy and sit at tables to watch the show, allowing you to become part of the production. For some of our performances you will be able to purchase tickets which will provide you with food during the performance. All catering will be done in house, led by Claire Brockhouse (head of ADT and Catering) and her fabulous team of BTEC Catering students. Tickets will be available from 2nd March from Bosworth Academy main reception.

A big thank you goes out to all students and parents who have given extra help with the cake sale and supporting the fundraising stage crew have been doing to raise funds for the production. Also ‘Name the Bugsy Malone Teddy Bear’ will be continuing throughout the shows with the winner being announced following the final performance. The teddy bear will include one of the Trilby hats and one of the fully working ‘splurge guns’.

Please come and support us and bring your friends and family too!

Many thanks

150 New Lifesavers at Bosworth Academy

On Friday 12th December 2014, Year 10 students were given an opportunity to learn about the importance of first response and CPR. The training was part of the British Heart Foundation initiative ā€˜Call, Push Rescue’ and supported by the ground breaking Leicestershire Heartsafe Programme. Bosworth Academy students were very fortunate to have trainers from all backgrounds including Cardiac Specialists and Paramedics; the session itself was led by a top Cardiac Consultant from Glenfield Hospital. Our two Year 11 ambassadors, Beth Kenney and Stephen Gamage also provided support for the Year10 students. During the training, students were shown a short video/scenario which set the scene for the training and involved a young boy of the same age as the students. Following this students were each able to work with their own dummy to go through the CPR training. Students then had an opportunity to learn about how to use a defibrillator. The school as part of the programme now has a defibrillator on site; this will be placed in the reception area very soon. Student feedback from the event was very positive, many enjoyed the practical part of the training together with the fact that can now feel confident in saving a life! The Academies aim is to now roll the training out to Year 11 with the support of the PE faculty and the resources provided to us by the British Heart Foundations.

To Seek – To Find – To Make Safe

Richard III’s remains will be re-interred in Leicester Cathedral in March 2015. In order to mark this remarkable event and to bring a contemporary relevance, the community of Desford are constructing a ā€œCascade and swathā€ of 5929 White York Roses. Each rose representing one of the 5929 instances of a citizens of Leicestershire who go missing ever year, the vast majority are young people. Each instance of a missing person is caused by a failure to protect often the most vulnerable in our society. As with the passion to seek, find and make safe King Richard, we pledge to seek, find and make safe those young people who for whatever reason go missing each year in Leicestershire. Fitness Fortnight in Yr10 & Yr11 Core PE (12th-23rd January)

It will be fitness fortnight during core PE from Monday 12- Friday 23 January. This is the opportunity for students to take part in a variety of different fitness sessions. They will be challenged to work as hard as they can which will help them to develop their resilience. All students will need to bring a full change of PE kit, even those students who are carrying an injury. One option will involve a bootcamp session where students will be exercising in the mud and are likely to get very dirty. If your child is interested in this, it is important they bring clothes that are suitable. A water bottle is also recommended!
