Spoken word performance poetry

This week we had a performance poet, Rob Reeves a local Leicester poet work with our Year 9 students on spoken work poetry. Students really enjoyed the opportunity to craft and perform their poetry using the mic.

About National Poetry Day

National Poetry Day is the annual mass celebration on the first Thursday of October that encourages all to enjoy, discover and share poetry. This year, National Poetry Day takes place on 7 October 2021, and the theme is Choice.

National Poetry Day generates an explosion of activity nationwide, thousands of amazing events across the UK – on doorsteps and at kitchen tables, in gardens and streets, in schools, libraries and public spaces both online and offline – all celebrating poetry’s power to bring people together.

 

 

 

 

 

Work Experience Summer 2022

Students in Years 10, 11, 12 & 13 have now been given information about Work Experience applications for Summer 2022. A letter has also gone home to parents via the WEDUC app- please find a copy of this below. Application forms can be collected from MLT Student Reception or The Oaks office or downloaded from the Work Experience section of the Academy website where you will also find the student and parent guides.

Share your stories about growing up in Leicester.

Open to KS3 and KS4, the Attenborough Arts centre in Leicester are looking for stories from families/parents who have moved to Leicester recently or a long time ago. Share what home means to you growing up in Leicester.

This  is a celebration of Leicester’s people, as part of the University’s centennial events this autumn, with an aim to create an oral history of migrants and refugees living in Leicester details below:

World class writing competition

There is a World Class essay submission, following the exciting launch of the competition by this year’s judge, Jamie Johnson author Dan Freedman, and last year’s competition winners Gracie (Year 9, President Kennedy School) and Prisha (Year 6, Berkeley Academy).
Everything you need to know about this year’s essay writing competition, how to enter, prizes and terms can be found on the attached summary and on our competition web page, where you can also download last year’s winning essays and top tips from winning students.  This is a great opportunity for keen writers to get involved with a summer project.
World Class super-curricular activity 19th July 4pm
Dan’s latest novel, Unstoppable, has been chosen by Oxford University as its Oxplore Book Club Book of the month. Visit the Oxplore web page for fantastic resources linked to the book and its themes, including an analysis from expert psychologist Dr Lucy Bowes.
On 19th July at 4pm Oxford University are hosting a free online super-curricular activity for 11-14 year olds – Book Club Live with Dan Freedman. Dan has asked us to share this opportunity with you in the hope that as many World Class students will attend and submit a book review to be in with a chance of winning the books on the Oxplore recommended reading list.

Reading Academy breakfast celebrations

Today Reading Academy enjoyed a celebratory breakfast for their continuous hard work. They received certificates for their achievements and progress. There will be more celebrations for more of Reading Academy and high achievers this week. Well done to all!

Tackling online hate

You can help to tackle online hate by following these simple rules:

  • Reporting hateful content
  • Not responding to hateful content
  • Setting a positive example for others to follow
  • Showing support for positive campaigns
  • Talking to others and getting advice if you find something upsetting
  • Inspire kindness and block those who seek to spread hate

 

Remember, you can report any hateful content to any member of staff in the school.  Always report it.
