New York, New York

Finance, Culture and Commerce.

Over 50 Sixth Form students at Bosworth Academy gained valuable first-hand experience of the commercial, financial, and cultural aspects of one of the world’s most fascinating and important global cities.

The business studies trip to New York included visits to the famous financial district around Wall Street, as well as gaining an insight into the commercial operations supporting Macey’s department store. The cultural aspects of the trip included a tour of the Museum of Modern Art, as well as visiting Ellis Island – bringing to life the historical background behind the growth of the USA through immigration from around the world.

Student Lifeguard leads the way in safe swimming

Bosworth Academy Sixth Form student Lauren Bailey combines her passion for swimming with her extended learning qualifications to help keep swimmers safe in the Academy’s pool.

As part of her extended learning qualification, Lauren identified a need to improve safety information in the swimming pool environment. Using strict academic rigour, Lauren produced a research methodology to help her understand more how the public views and responds to safety information in the swimming pool environment.

The resulting analysis of her research helped her understand the real issues, and to inform the creative design of a new range of safety posters in the pool area. The project involved working with a professional design and communications agency to produce a range of information and safety posters for use in the pool.

“Safe behaviour in the swimming pool is much more than just avoiding accidents, if you follow some simple guides then not only will you be safe, you’ll have more fun swimming!” Lauren said.

Outside of her academic studies, Lauren is a qualified lifeguard at the Bosworth Academy Pool. After completing her A levels, Lauren is planning to go to Loughborough University and to continue her career in sports education.

Google Expedition Pioneers

Virtual Reality brings learning to life for the students and staff of Bosworth Academy by allowing them to explore the world from the comfort of the classroom.

The Academy has recently trialled the Google Expeditions Virtual Reality App, evaluating its benefits and how virtual reality can be used to enhance the learning experience. Using virtual reality headsets, students are immersed in a virtual learning world controlled by their teacher using a tablet. This makes it possible for students to visit and learn about a diverse and extensive range of topics such as; the Great Barrier Reef; Jerusalem; the human body from the inside, the literary world of Roald Rahl; and many more places without having to leave the classroom.

This opens up an innovative and exciting method of learning about the wider world that will enhance the rich experience for every student.

Lights, Camera, Action!

This autumn term saw the vision that is Bosworth Theatre Company come alive.

As with the very best West End productions, the on stage talent can only perform with the backing of the ‘behind the scenes’ talent. That’s exactly how Bosworth Theatre Company operates. Students are taking on the roles of stage management and directions; set design, costume and make-up; lighting, audio and props; as well as business planning, marketing and front of house roles.

The company draws on the vast in school facilities of the Art and Design team, Textiles, Media, English and of course the Dance and Drama departments, all combining to produce first class dramatic sketches, dance performances, and a range of musical productions.

Preparing for the summer sun

As we approach long winter evenings many parents will be planning their family summer break to the sun. It’s no secret that holidays during children’s school term times can be much cheaper than in the main six-week school break, and this encourages many families to look into the idea of taking their child out of school during the academic year to facilitate a cheaper family holiday.

The school recognizes that time spent together as a family, exploring and experiencing different cultures, and just having fun are all so vitally important in developing fully rounded and confident members of society. However, missing school causes severe disruption to your child’s education, and study after study shows that it affects their performance in exams and chances later in life.

The legal position is clear regarding the parents’ duty to ensure their child receives an education. However I appeal to you to consider the longer term cost to your child’s education and resulting future life opportunities; and plan your holiday’s to allow them to thrive and achieve in school.

Students work shines out at two stunning Open evenings

OPEN EVENING IMG_8930Visitors from across the region attended the two recent Open Evenings making these events the busiest ever.

Both the KS3/KS4 evening and the Post 16 Sixth Form provided an opportunity for parents and young people to experience first hand why Bosworth Academy has become first choice school for so many young people.

With numerous displays of students work on display, the Academy Ambassadors provided both informed insight and guidance for visitors touring the school.

Louise Holdback, Head of Post 16 Sixth Form said, “These successful Open Evenings give our visitors and the local community the chance to meet the teachers, staff and importantly the students at Bosworth Academy, as well as experience the outstanding facilities across the sciences, art and design, as well as our brilliant sports and performing arts resources”.

Celebration of Success

Students and their guests enjoyed a glittering awards evening at the impressive Leicester City Football Stadium to recognise some remarkable successes. Nomination for Awards included individual success in examination results, as well as those students demonstrating a positive attitude to learning, and their achievements across subject areas.

From Vine to Vinegar

Vine to Vinegar IMG_0989There is no better way to understand how chemical processes work than to do it for real. The autumn harvest from the Academy’s greenhouse produced an abundance of grapes allowing students to get to grips with turning organic fruits into vinegar.

The Laureate students help to tend the vine throughout the year gaining insight into how photosynthesis works in organic matter, the capillary action within the vine, and science behind plant growth.

But that’s only part of the process. After harvesting the bumper crop and participating in the traditional style of grape treading, students took the resulting liquid into the chemistry lab to take the product on it’s transformational journey from grape juice to vinegar.

They were able to experience the chemical process in which ethyl alcohol undergoes partial oxidation that results in the formation of acetaldehyde. From this the acetaldehyde was converted into acetic acid – vinegar. Bringing to life the chemical reaction from Vine to Vinegar as we all now know:

CH3CH2OH > CH3CHO > CH3COOH
