Meet The Principal 2014

[half]

How long have you been principal at Bosworth Academy?

Just over 5 years now and I’ve loved every minute of it, apart from when it snows!

Can you tell us about your team?

One of Bosworth’s outstanding characteristics is that we know the success of every child is one big team effort. We have over 90 teachers and 60 support staff who are all incredibly committed, enthusiastic, passionate and professional about what we do. Additionally, our students and parents understand that they are just as vital to the team’s success, and with us create a really powerful force for good in our community.

What are you particularly proud?

Most of all our students. It’s a real privilege to be able to work with young people; they continually surprise me and inspire me in equal measure. Since working at Bosworth I’ve seen so many achieve remarkable things and often against the odds. Whether it’s the sixth-formers who have gone off to Cambridge, the young man about to become a doctor coming back to mentor others, our young sports leaders who go out and coach in the community or our A level students who are helping children in primary schools to read, it all makes being at Bosworth exhilarating.

Can you tell us something about Bosworth Academy’s journey over the past five years?

What a journey! We have set out to create a school that is outstanding in all areas and makes an invaluable contribution to our community. It’s probably an endless journey but we’ve come a long, long way in a national context where it’s harder and harder to secure great exam results. In 2013, two out of three of our students achieved the magical 5A*-C including English and Mathematics, that’s well above the national average. Since 2008, on average, every student now gets one grade higher in every one of their top 8 subjects and over a third of our students get 3A*/A grades. In the sixth form we have the best A level results ever with more students going to the top Russell Group universities.[/half][half]Is it just about exam results?

Absolutely not, but no matter what else you are working on you have to remember that it’s the doors that we can open for our young people that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. The keys to these doors are the exam certificates we give them and schools should never forget this. After saying that, our students would not be successful in exams if we did not instil strong values around respect for others, hard work, resilience and moral responsibility. Most importantly though young people should see learning as fun, relevant and engaging. Our teachers understand this and love to make learning enjoyable.

We know the school is welcoming year 7 students for the first time this August. Tell us about your vision and how your preparations are going:

We have taken the opportunity, whilst establishing a key stage three school from scratch, to learn from the best practice around the UK and internationally, rather than just recreate what already exists. We are having a small ‘school within a school’ called the ‘Laureates’ that will operate an innovative and exciting curriculum using the most up to date technologies. The name ‘Laureates’ means to reward for high endeavour and this tells you something about what we want for our students. As I write this, the building work has just begun and we are looking forward to seeing over 150 year 7 students on their induction days in July. We are all really excited at the prospect of being able to take year 7 on an outstanding journey to success, from primary school to university.

What makes Bosworth Academy special?

Our values. I’ve mentioned many already, but most importantly the mantra ‘no student should underachieve’ drives us daily. Though this is quite an ambition for any school, we do not believe it to be acceptable that any child, at any level, achieves less than is possible. We know though that this is not just ensuring that every child achieves their potential, we know we are instrumental in defining that potential. It’s our mission to get all our young people to truly believe that they can ‘be better than they ever believed they could be’.

Year 11 Supported Study Programme

A number of examinations take place during the 4 week half-term following the Easter Break. During this half-term all lessons will continue as normal and it is critical that students attend all of their lessons.

This academic year we will be running a Supported Study Programme for our Year 11 students. This programme of booster revision sessions will begin on 2nd June and run until all GCSE examinations have ended. From 2nd June the Supported Study Programme will build in extended revision sessions for exams yet to take place after half-term. These revision sessions will be extremely focused and aimed at ensuring students are fine tuning their knowledge, understanding and skills. Part of this programme will also include independent study slots where Year 11 students may choose to study in the Compass, Dining Area or at home, as well as attending taught periods. You will be aware of when these independent study slots are from student timetables which will be issued to all Year 11 students before Easter.

Year 12 Gifted and Talented Conference

At Bosworth we have a proud tradition of working closely with our highest ability students to offer them opportunities for stretch & challenge as part of our Gifted & Talented Programme.

Our Year 12 Gifted and Talented group most recently attended the High Achievers conference. They took part in mock interviews and a question and answer session with top professors from Cambridge and Oxford as well as other Russell group universities. This allowed them to develop their interview skills and build confidence in preparation for their UCAS application process after summer.

We are also pleased that Patrick Taylor part of our Year 10 Gifted and Talented group has been accepted onto the Cambridge University, Pembroke and St.Catherine’s Colleges Easter Residential for 3 days. Over these days he will take part in scientific masterclasses supported by top Cambridge University Academics.

The Laureates School Tie Design

Tessa Birch, a former Bosworth student who has established a career in Fashion Textile Design in both New York and London, has created The Laureates School tie design. It incorporates the Academy’s current logo and colour pallet as inspiration, and is being manufactured for Laureates students to wear in the new school year.

Bosworth Selected For Rugby World Cup Role

Bosworth Academy has been successful in becoming a Rugby World Cup Host City Hub School for Leicester. One of its first tasks as a Host City Hub School is to recruit School Rugby Ambassadors and fill volunteer places at Rugby World Cup 2015. This is an incredible opportunity only open to a small number of schools and the Academy is proud to be able to offer this amazing opportunity to its students.
The ambassadors will use their leadership and communication skills to inform and excite pupils
about rugby and the Rugby World Cup 2015 through events, assemblies, competitions, and whole school engagement within their own school and surrounding primary schools. The School Rugby Ambassador programme will provide young people with the opportunity to develop personal, social and employability skills, such as communication, decision making, citizenship, leadership, team work, creativity, organisation and planning. Furthermore it will enable young people to be ambassadors and role models for their school and the tournament.

Video Conference with Ukraine

A group of Year 10 and 12 History students, held a video conference with a citizen of Ukraine to discuss issues concerning Crimea and the revolution taking place there at this time. The students found the experience highly informative and inspirational, one quoted “I wish we could have had it with the whole school, I’m sure that they would have found it as interesting as I did”.

Our students used this opportunity to ask questions to Olga Tomash, a proud citizen of Ukraine, during a Skype conference on Friday 14th March. This was both an exciting and educational experience during which students were able to understand the links between Ukraine’s past and present.

The Heartsafe Project – A Summary

The Leicestershire Heartsafe Schools Programme is the first of its kind in the country and the aim is to teach every Year 10 student in the city and county emergency and resuscitation skills to increase the chances of lives being saved. Each school that attended has been equipped with a defibrillator – a piece of equipment that can save a life.
On the 28th February, we and two other members of staff at Bosworth Academy along with many other schools in Leicestershire attended the launch of this valuable project at the Leicester Tigers’ ground. Upon entering the conference room, we were astounded by the amount of care and devotion that had gone into making this event possible, and the buzzing atmosphere around us. The opening speech, led by Dr. Doug Skehan, taught us the importance of knowing emergency resuscitation skills and the science behind it. Following his speech, we had the chance to listen to people whose lives were saved by CPR, which further emphasized that fact that a simple procedure can save a life.

Following on from this, we then were lucky enough to be taught by a professional about how to perform CPR effectively and properly, and have a chance to ask interesting questions to survivors and doctors.
The aim for this project is that within a month to six weeks, CPR training is to be provided in schools, ensuring all students are equipped with the knowledge of how to save a life.

The day was enriching. Upon leaving, us, and I’m sure lots of other attendees were inspired by many facets of the project. We now are equipped with the skills save a life: there is nothing more inspiring than that. We look forward to preparing students at Bosworth with these vital skills, so if they should be needed, students will be able to act fast.
