Year 11 Bosworth Academy students and staff celebrated some wonderful results at GCSE level. With Ofqual ensuring GCSE outcomes return to pre-pandemic 2019 levels the high grades achieved today are significant.

Though this year’s cohort of year 11 have seen learning disrupted through the pandemic they have risen to the challenge of examinations returning nearly to normal.

“It was amazing to see so many happy students this morning, celebrating their results with their parents, carers and friends. Our year 11 students have shown real purpose these last few years in wanting to achieve above and beyond what they thought possible. They showed such determination, resilience and tenacity in rising to the challenge of 2023 exams, which Ofqual have ensured are now comparable with pre-pandemic 2019 outcomes.
I’m proud of how they have engaged in so many aspects of wider school life, remaining optimistic and motivated to overcome the challenges they had to face during a turbulent secondary education.
I’d like to thank our superb, dedicated team of staff, who have inspired and supported our students to achieve great things, at times helping students to overcome such adversity. “Huge congratulations to all of our students who have received their A/AS examination results today. They have remained resilient and worked exceptionally hard, under challenging circumstances, with these A-levels being the first set of public examinations that they have sat. Throughout their time at Bosworth Academy they have focused exceptionally well, shown true grit and determination to overcome any difficulties, and remained enthusiastic about learning. There have been so many outstanding and inspirational student achievements today that we are so proud of. It’s been great to see so many students achieving places on their first choice University courses, especially considering the concerning stories we heard about this in the press over the summer.

“I would like to take this opportunity to recognise and congratulate the effort, commitment and achievement of our sixth form students receiving grades today. Some sat externally assessed exams for the first time and they have achieved a great set of results.

These grades will help many of them to confirm their places at university or on an apprenticeship, and I am pleased by the growing number of students who have secured places on degree apprenticeships with some very prestigious companies.

Although academic achievement is important, we know that one of the most valuable measures of success is the ability for students to have developed the skills to enable them to flourish in whichever pathway they choose, those of communication, collaboration, critical thinking, character, creativity and citizenship. It is important to recognise the hard work and commitment of our students, but also the school staff and parents/carers during another difficult year. 2023 examination results are significant as Ofqual have returned to pre-pandemic grading meaning that national results will be more comparable with pre-pandemic 2019 outcomes.

Senior examiners have importantly reviewed the quality of student work, and made allowances this summer where national performance is lower than before the pandemic due to disruption. Universities are aware of the approach to grading in 2023 and have taken this into account when making offers.

• Cheera Au who will read Biochemistry at the University of Leicester achieved 3A*s in Biology, Chemistry and Maths.
• Luke Brown who will read Mechanical Engineering at University of Warwick achieved 3A*s in Chemistry, Physics and Maths.
• Evie Clark who will read Fashion at University of Manchester achieved 3A*s in Textiles, Biology, Maths and an A in Chemistry.
• Pip Wall who will read an Art Foundation course at De Montfort University achieved 3A* in Photography, Textiles and Sociology.
• Roshan Ali who will read Software Engineering achieved 2A*s in Chemistry and Maths, and 2 As in Computing and Further Maths.

Luke Brown’s mother said that she was “beyond proud”: Luke and his friend Ed Brown met in Reception and have been best friends throughout their school journey. They continue their educational journey together, having both secured places at the University of Warwick.

We strongly suggest that Year 13 students bring with them a charged mobile phone, pen and paper, as well as their Ucas ID number, just in case they need to contact universities or UCAS.

If results are not quite what was hoped for, or students wish to discuss their options please make an appointment to see a member of the Post 16 Team by emailing Mrs Lesley Brookes, Post 16 Administrator, at [email protected] or in person when collecting results.

Please note that in order to continue into Year 13, you must have achieved a minimum of two E grades at AS, or end of year internal grades, and be continuing in those subjects.

If you wish to drop a subject going forward into Year 13, please see Mrs Brookes in the Post 16 Office for a blue form at the start of the autumn term. Forms will NOT be available until then.

There are lots of resources available to support students at this time including The Ucas website, for example, where students can listen to the “Clearing Choices” podcasts; alongside this students may consult the National Careers Service or The Student Room also has some great support materials.

Further guidance around careers can be found at the National Careers Service hotline number (0800 100 900) and also on the Ucas website. For those who may require additional support with their mental health/wellbeing, students and parents/carers can find resources such as those provided by Place2Be very useful. There are also great options for supporting the transition to university, which many students will also find a source of anxiety, such as Anna Freud’s webinars.
