Olympic Star Get To Grips With Pupils

Team GB Medallist Karina Bryant took time out to visit two local schools on May 10th to teach pupils more about the sport of judo and the life of an elite athlete. As part of the Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport Olympic and Paralympic Roadshow Karina visited pupils from Barlestone Church of England Primary School and Bosworth Academy. Both schools identified pupils to attend an inspirational assembly providing pupils with the chance to ask questions and see close up a London 2012 medal. Karina spoke honestly about her experiences at London 2012 and the ups and downs of a career that has spanned 16 years. A career that has included medals at the all the major championships but also disappointments at previous Olympics.

Karina also spent time on the mat delivering judo masterclasses to pupils who attend the judo clubs that operate at both schools; including Matt Bratton who has just been selected for the GB squad. Pictured from left to right are Bosworth Academy students Sam Marston, Catherine Goodge, Joe Kilby, Jamie Blower , Matt Bratton.

Karina also took time during her visit to Bosworth Academy to meet with students that had produced artwork that appeared in the Athlete’s apartments at London 2012. This opportunity was the results of the Academy’s involvement in the Get Set 2012 education programme when students were given the opportunity to work with artist Tine Bech to produce Olympic related images using light technology. Only recently has the Academy been given permission from the British Olympic Authority to reproduce the images for display around school and just like they did in the Athlete’s apartments the images capture the attention of all those that see them. Pictured from left to right are Bosworth Academy students Catherine Goodge, Victoria Straughn, Sophie Clarke, Fay Tomlinson, Kira Pattinson, Lucy Neale, Hannah Lowe, Robyn Elms and Thea Ward-Worley who were involved in the project.

A-Level History Visit to Auschwitz

Our visit to Oświęcim, the site of one of the biggest Nazi concentration and death camps, Auschwitz-Birkenau, was a harrowing and insightful experience. There are few words to describe the feeling of walking the untouched paths that the victims of the Holocaust walked, and it is something that we think we will not forget. Our tour guide was incredible, and the experience, though very sad, was helpful and interesting in terms of furthering our study of the Holocaust in Year 13 History. There is an atmosphere at Auschwitz that is hard to place; but we recommend that it is a visit everyone should make in order to remind themselves of the great capabilities of humanity and what we might be able to do now with what we know about the events that took place there.

1,000-mile Cycle Ride

‘I am not a natural athlete, but am off on 1,000-mile cycle ride’

Instead of relaxing over the Easter holidays, Bosworth Academy head teacher Chris Parkinson will be cycling 1,000 miles to Spain for charity.

He is taking on the endurance challenge not only to show to his students that they can succeed through hard work, no matter how tough it is, but to say a huge thank you to the Midlands Air Ambulance Service for saving the life of a family member.

NO SPAIN, NO GAIN: Chris Parkinson, head at Bosworth Academy, will cycle 1,000 miles to raise money for the air ambulance.

Chris’ sister in law’s brother, Dave McMahon, 46, was working on a roof in Birmingham when it gave way and he fell 80ft onto a concrete floor, suffering massive internal bleeding and breaking several bones.

He was flown to hospital and was in intensive care and rehabilitation in Birmingham for months, but is now also taking part in the bike ride to Spain.

Chris said: “It was the quick actions of the air ambulance which saved his life.

“They got him out of there and to the right place to receive treatment. It was very much touch-and-go so this is one way of saying a huge thank you to them and giving something back.”

The 42-year-old head teacher has been training for the past nine months for the challenge and says it is going to be one of the toughest he has ever taken on.

He sets off on Good Friday, starting the ride by cycling on to the ferry at Dover and off again at Calais before the hard work begins.

The pair will cycle through France for the following 10 days and end their journey in the Spanish village of Port-Bou.

“I’m not a natural athlete so it’s been really hard, especially training in the winter months and having a six year-old daughter and a busy job,” said Chris.

“I’ve certainly become fitter over the past few months, cycling around 70 miles every Saturday morning and 30 on a Sunday. I’ve even braved cycling to work wearing my Lycra twice a week, but the physical and mental challenge of this is going to be huge.

“I was always the last person they picked for the football team, but I’ve always enjoyed a bit of cycling so that’s why we came up with this idea.”

Chris and Dave will have to average at least 90 miles a day to complete the journey.

They will sleep in a camper van being driven by brother-in law David Painting, who works for the ambulance service in Birmingham.

“The van looks huge from the outside, but is pretty small on the inside so just fitting all three of us in is going to be hard,” Chris said.

The trio aim to raise £1,500 and have already reached £1,000.

Anyone who wants to contribute can do so by phoning Bosworth Academy on 01455 822 841 or via Chris’ charity web page at: www.justgiving.com/Chris-Parkinson42

Bosworth Academy Students Maths Challenge

Recently 120 year 10 and 11 students sat the Intermediate Maths Challenge. This is a national event that is aimed at the top third of pupils in Year 10 and 11 in England and Wales.

The challenge consists of answering multiple choice questions. The questions are challenging and in one section of the paper candidates will lose marks for putting the wrong answer. Students are only allowed a pencil and some paper to do calculations on, and a rubber to change their answers.
Question one was:

Which of the following is divisible by 6?
A one million minus one
B one million minus two
C one million minus three
D one million minus four
E one million minus five

One of the later questions was:
Four brothers are discussing the order in which they were born. Two are lying and two are telling the truth. Which two are telling the truth?

Alfred: “Bernard is the youngest.” Horatio: “Bernard is the oldest and I am the youngest.”

Inigo: “I was born last.” Bernard: “I’m neither the youngest nor the oldest.”

A Bernard and Inigo
B Horatio and Bernard
C Alfred and Horatio
D Alfred and Bernard
E Inigo and Horatio

High performers
The top 40% of students who participate receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate in the ratio 1:2:3 and each institution receives a Best in School certificate.
Around 500 of the highest scorers nationally are invited to take part in the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad papers: A further 5,500 pupils from across all year groups are invited to sit either the grey or pink European Kangaroo papers. These are taken by pupils from over 30 countries worldwide. We are expecting to receive the results in March.

Olympic Sport Opportunity For Bosworth Academy Students

Bosworth Academy students will have the opportunity to complete the RYA Level 1 Sailing Award at Market Bosworth Water Park starting Monday 8th April with tuition from Colin MaGee. The course will provide a sound introduction to the sport of sailing and is ideally suited to complete beginners or those that have only sailed a little. The eight week course is being offered at a reduced rate and students who successfully complete the Level 1 Award may be able to progress into the Leicestershire and Rutland Youth Sailing team. A limited number of places are still available and information can be collected from main reception.
