Bosworth Selected For Rugby World Cup Role

Bosworth Academy has been successful in becoming a Rugby World Cup Host City Hub School for Leicester. One of its first tasks as a Host City Hub School is to recruit School Rugby Ambassadors and fill volunteer places at Rugby World Cup 2015. This is an incredible opportunity only open to a small number of schools and the Academy is proud to be able to offer this amazing opportunity to its students.
The ambassadors will use their leadership and communication skills to inform and excite pupils
about rugby and the Rugby World Cup 2015 through events, assemblies, competitions, and whole school engagement within their own school and surrounding primary schools. The School Rugby Ambassador programme will provide young people with the opportunity to develop personal, social and employability skills, such as communication, decision making, citizenship, leadership, team work, creativity, organisation and planning. Furthermore it will enable young people to be ambassadors and role models for their school and the tournament.

Video Conference with Ukraine

A group of Year 10 and 12 History students, held a video conference with a citizen of Ukraine to discuss issues concerning Crimea and the revolution taking place there at this time. The students found the experience highly informative and inspirational, one quoted “I wish we could have had it with the whole school, I’m sure that they would have found it as interesting as I did”.

Our students used this opportunity to ask questions to Olga Tomash, a proud citizen of Ukraine, during a Skype conference on Friday 14th March. This was both an exciting and educational experience during which students were able to understand the links between Ukraine’s past and present.

The Heartsafe Project – A Summary

The Leicestershire Heartsafe Schools Programme is the first of its kind in the country and the aim is to teach every Year 10 student in the city and county emergency and resuscitation skills to increase the chances of lives being saved. Each school that attended has been equipped with a defibrillator – a piece of equipment that can save a life.
On the 28th February, we and two other members of staff at Bosworth Academy along with many other schools in Leicestershire attended the launch of this valuable project at the Leicester Tigers’ ground. Upon entering the conference room, we were astounded by the amount of care and devotion that had gone into making this event possible, and the buzzing atmosphere around us. The opening speech, led by Dr. Doug Skehan, taught us the importance of knowing emergency resuscitation skills and the science behind it. Following his speech, we had the chance to listen to people whose lives were saved by CPR, which further emphasized that fact that a simple procedure can save a life.

Following on from this, we then were lucky enough to be taught by a professional about how to perform CPR effectively and properly, and have a chance to ask interesting questions to survivors and doctors.
The aim for this project is that within a month to six weeks, CPR training is to be provided in schools, ensuring all students are equipped with the knowledge of how to save a life.

The day was enriching. Upon leaving, us, and I’m sure lots of other attendees were inspired by many facets of the project. We now are equipped with the skills save a life: there is nothing more inspiring than that. We look forward to preparing students at Bosworth with these vital skills, so if they should be needed, students will be able to act fast.

Open Hands Appeal

We had a charity Christmas Appeal again this year at Bosworth, aiming to help those less fortunate than us. Tutor groups were set the challenge of gathering as many non-perishable items as they could and the winning groups and individuals were rewarded. We were absolutely thrilled with the amount of items that were collected and altogether they looked really impressive! Open Hands have written to thank all pupils and staff for our donation, saying ‘A very special thank you for the astounding amount of food you collected for us this winter. We appreciate all your time and efforts. Your donations will help us to help a lot of people in need in the city. Thanks for your generosity.’

Open Hands have also sent a video message from their headquarters to thank students personally which has been played out in assemblies this week as part of our celebration assembly. Students’ should be really proud of their achievements and we are really proud that as a school we came together and helped those less fortunate than ourselves at Christmas.

Well done to everyone!

Young Achievers Awards 2013

Four high achieving, aspirational students were nominated for the Leicester Mercury Young Achievers Award 2013; Hannah Williamson for the Art achievement category, Kathrine Smith in the A Level achievement category, Joseph Aziz for Science & Maths and Charlotte Murgatoryd for her extraordinary fund raising efforts in the Community achievement category all of which can be seen below.

Bosworth student, Joseph Aziz, made it to the final in his category.

Joseph Aziz

Nominated for: Science and Maths Achievement Award

The youngster’s passion for both Maths and Science has seen him excel in them. So much so he is expected to pick up top grades at GCSE.

He has spent several weekends taking part in the Royal Institution Mathematics master classes at Snibston and during half term holidays attended attended De Montfort University to complete a course in robotics.

In addition, he went to Cambridge yo attend a science festival with his mum and aunt and has ambitions to study there one day.

Joseph’s Talents also extend to raising more than £700 for breast cancer research while at his primary school by doing a sponsored no TV for a month.

He was nominated by Eileen James, who said: “Joseph is a very dedicated to learning in all areas.

“He is so knowledgeable for his age and loves ploughing through his books. He is currently Don Quixote which is his second favourite book, his first being Lord of the Rings.

“He is a lovely boy and has a lovely disposition.”

Charlotte Murgatoryd

Nominated for: Community Achievement Award

Charlotte is a Year 10 student at Bosworth Academy. She has had to face many challenges in her life, as she has a very serious heart condition which means that she may face a heart transplant in the near future.

In spite of this, Charlotte is unfailingly cheerful, and is determined to reach her full potential both inside and outside school. She is working hard at her GCSE courses, and is a committed fundraiser. As well as visiting local schools to raise awareness of heart conditions and children with serious illness, Charlotte has raised impressive amounts for charities.

‘Heart Link’ which buys equipment for heart patients in Leicestershire, has benefitted from over £6,000 thanks to Charlotte, and ‘Dreamflight’ which sends seriously ill youngsters on the holiday of a lifetime, has received over £13,000.

Charlotte is an inspiration, and is a great ambassador for young people. She would be a very worthy recipient of this award.

Katherine Smith

Nominated for: A-Level Achievement Award

Katherine joined us at Bosworth Academy in Year 10 as a very timid, but clearly very able student. From this time Katherine spent four years with us and grew exponentially in both confidence and ability. She is a testament to hard work, one of the most able Science students we have ever taught and rightly deserves this nomination.

When we were given our set lists in the Science department in 2011 we were all pleased to
see her name amongst the many other talented Scientists. It was clear that Katherine was very driven to succeed from the outset of her Post-16 education and it’s not a question of if, but when her Science knowledge will surpass us all. She quickly showed that she not only had a natural flair for Science, but was determined not to rest upon her laurels and would push herself to be the very best she could be. She always sought feedback throughout her two years in class and more importantly acted upon any advice given, making outstanding progress. Never afraid to question, Katherine showed great maturity when approaching for extra support or clarification.

When she decided she wished to apply to read Natural Sciences at Cambridge, there was never any doubt that she would be an asset to the University, but also that it would be their great privilege to admit her. Her determination was demonstrated when she decided to take on an extra AS level in Mathematics in Year 13 to increase her chances of success. Although not naturally mathematically minded, Katherine worked as hard as ever, and was able to achieve the grade A that secured her place at Cambridge.

Katherine was always one of the shining stars in her Year – not easy when surrounded by many other gifted and talented students. However, she never displayed any signs of arrogance but was always modest and humble when praised. Even when her workload became so heavy that she started to doubt her abilities, she showed again her quiet determination and resilience to succeed.

As I hoped (but I think she did not dare to) Katherine achieved an A* in Biology, A in Chemistry, A in Geography, A in AS Maths and is now in her first year at Cambridge. We, as her teachers are all immensely proud of her, and are merely a bit-part players in her success. Katherine has matured into a remarkable young woman who it has been our pleasure and privilege to teach and we shall look back in years to come and recall how much she had to teach us.

Hannah Williamson

Nominated for: Arts Achievement Award

Hannah epitomizes all the qualities of the ideal Art and Design student. She is motivated, creative, original, inventive and enthusiastic. Hannah is always looking for opportunities to develop her work and produces far more than is asked of her. She talks fluently about her work and ideas and is always asking what if?

Gaining straight A grades at AS level and achieving almost faultless marks she is undoubtedly the best student we have ever had at Bosworth Academy. Outside school Hannah has excelled by winning East Midlands Young Artist of the Year 2013 for her outstanding watercolour painting. Hannah has the potential to become an extraordinary designer/artist and we are confident that she will excel in any field she chooses to specialise in.

There is no doubt she would be a very worthy recipient of the Young Achievers Arts Achievement Award should she be selected.
