My names Joe Solonenko and I am a student currently studying at Bosworth Academy. Me and Hannah Callender have decided to put a team of 12 students from Bosworth Academy together to take part in a miniature triathlon, which will cover the distance from London to Calais. Together as a team and as part of Bosworth Academy we hope to raise some money for a great charity which has helped the lives of many people. This event will take place on Monday the 22nd of April.
Together we will beat cancer.

Recently 120 year 10 and 11 students sat the Intermediate Maths Challenge. This is a national event that is aimed at the top third of pupils in Year 10 and 11 in England and Wales.

The challenge consists of answering multiple choice questions. The questions are challenging and in one section of the paper candidates will lose marks for putting the wrong answer. Students are only allowed a pencil and some paper to do calculations on, and a rubber to change their answers.
Question one was:

Which of the following is divisible by 6?
A one million minus one
B one million minus two
C one million minus three
D one million minus four
E one million minus five

One of the later questions was:
Four brothers are discussing the order in which they were born. Two are lying and two are telling the truth. Which two are telling the truth?

Alfred: “Bernard is the youngest.” Horatio: “Bernard is the oldest and I am the youngest.”

Inigo: “I was born last.” Bernard: “I’m neither the youngest nor the oldest.”

High performers
The top 40% of students who participate receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate in the ratio 1:2:3 and each institution receives a Best in School certificate.
Around 500 of the highest scorers nationally are invited to take part in the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad papers: A further 5,500 pupils from across all year groups are invited to sit either the grey or pink European Kangaroo papers. These are taken by pupils from over 30 countries worldwide. We are expecting to receive the results in March.

Bosworth Academy students will have the opportunity to complete the RYA Level 1 Sailing Award at Market Bosworth Water Park starting Monday 8th April with tuition from Colin MaGee. The course will provide a sound introduction to the sport of sailing and is ideally suited to complete beginners or those that have only sailed a little. The eight week course is being offered at a reduced rate and students who successfully complete the Level 1 Award may be able to progress into the Leicestershire and Rutland Youth Sailing team. A limited number of places are still available and information can be collected from main reception.

In the cold, wet and early hours of Friday 8th February a group of twenty Year 10 History students made their way to Berlin. The purpose of the trip was to provide students with the opportunity to explore the city, which has played such a crucial part in the development of modern world history.

The trip was carefully planned to complement and enrich the GCSE Modern World History course students cover. This course includes topics such as Weimar and Nazi Germany and the Cold War. Throughout the weekend the group explored a number of historical sites including Checkpoint Charlie, the remains of the Berlin Wall, the sites of the Gestapo and Stasi Headquarters as well as a visit to the Reichstag where students viewed the city skyline from the building’s famous glass dome. However, the most memorable moment of the weekend was also the quietest.

It came during our visit to Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, which evoked strong emotions in some and caused a moment of reflection for us all. Despite cramming the weekend with museum visits and guided tours the students found just enough time to sample the city’s cultural delights including the famous currywurst.

When asked to give feedback on their visit to Berlin the students said “Overall the history trip to Berlin was the best school trip we have ever been on because we have learnt more than we could learn in a class room and see with our own eyes what these are. The only thing that could be improved would be the weather!” This experience clearly shows the value of learning outside the classroom and the importance of maintaining this provision.

Our half-termly competition is being entered by record numbers of students from all year groups. Their challenge? To use all of the weekly words to create a short story that is both original and entertaining! We have had some great entries – the names of successful students are below. All have received certificates and for each ‘round’, a lucky, talented student also wins a coveted prize. Who will win next time?

Bosworth Academy students recognised as gifted in Geography visited County Hall for the Annual Mock United Nations General Assembly (MUNGA). Three teams made up of 10 students made several amendments to the United Nations Resolutions and had them all accepted by the General Assembly which represented a very successful day.

Alex Hook-Gordon helped prepare the group having participated last year in the event. All students returned to school excited and ambitious to prepare next year’s candidates and enter more debating events and competitions.

Three Academy students; Toby Tarrant, Niall Hurst and Robbie Jones came second in the U16 Ski Slalom in Birmingham. All three students completed the competition runs without mistakes and clocked up impressive individual times. The boys were awarded team medals, certificates and impressive hats. Their next outing will be in June at Telford. We congratulate them and wish them all the best for the next race in the series.

Our Business Studies teacher had promised a visit to Europe for a couple of years and we never believed him. The reality hit us at 5.25 a.m. on February 8th, when 27 of us set off on a 6 day adventure. With a 13 hour coach journey ahead of us, our spirits were surprisingly high. Maybe it was the thought of Disneyland the next day and the experience of a foreign land that spurred us on.

 
The relief of reaching the hotel was great – some real freedom. Our first exploits involved getting on the Bendy Bus to the Disney village and having some dinner. With some going to the Rainforest Café and others choosing the more mature, Café Mickey! Having a first look round the Disney store also saw some of the students expressing their inner child!

 
Waking up to the snow on Saturday was a surprise followed by a whole day ahead at the Disney parks. There was a vast array of rides to go on, even though the weather was cold and getting colder. Sunday was also spent at the Disney parks and that evening involved a visit to the Eiffel Tower, a River Cruise, and experiencing a French restaurant, snails and frogs legs too!

 
On Monday we headed into Paris to meet our French tour guide. We had a drive round, seeing the sights and part of the business district. We then took a stroll up to the Notre Dame. What a building – just like you imagine it to be and the bells! It was then time to spend some time at the Champs-Elysées for some shopping – a glamorous place and rather expensive! We also got a chance to have a look at the Arc de Triomphe, which was a tad scary with all the soldiers there with their guns!

 
Tuesday kicked off with a tour round the Stade de France. It was a really impressive building that can hold over 80,000 people. It was a good example of how to build a sports stadium within cost. Off then to the Sacré Cœur for the views and French restaurant number 2 for lunch. A great business opportunity for the owner that he nearly turned down the business of 19 people! That evening saw our final meal together at Planet Hollywood – our Business Studies teacher not so happy about the food delay – got us a 10% discount. We then went back to the hotel to finish the trip with a few games of cards.

 
On Wednesday we began the long journey home with the last bit of retail therapy at Cite Europe in Calais. We all arrived home at about 10.00pm, some 136.5 hours later, all ready for our own beds. What a trip!

24 Bosworth Academy students and three staff went to Paris over the recent February half term on a combined Languages and Business Studies trip. Highlights of the six day adventure were a guided tour of Paris and its main landmarks, including a river cruise on the Seine. A trip to the Stade de France, Disney World and the opportunity to sample French cuisine and culture. Feedback from both students and staff said it was a very successful ‘unforgettable’ experience.

Bosworth students did ‘something funny for money’ on Friday 15th March, Red Nose Day.

It’s that time of year again and Bosworth Academy students have been hard at work fundraising for this years Red Nose Day!

Red Nose Day brings the entire nation together to have fun, raise cash and change lives. Since its inception in 1985 Comic Relief has raised over £800 million for projects in the UK and Internationally and teachers and students at the Academy have clearly enjoyed taking part.

Fundraising events took place with individuals, tutor groups and teams ranging from a sponsored silence to cake sales and Basketball. The Harlem Share, non-dress code and music concert ensured a large number of the Academy community contributed to the fund raising effort.

Speaking about the day Year Head and Charity Events Organiser, Lorna Croucher said, “It created a fantastic buzz around the Academy and I’m pleased so many students wanted to get involved in such a good cause”.
